Located on Kauai's south shore, Shipwreck Beach is one of the largest expanses of beach along the Keoniloa Bay in the Poipu area. It's named after an old wooden shipwreck found on the beach, which mysteriously disappeared in 1982; and for many years, it was one of the best-hidden beaches on the island.
With its strong currents and coral reef, Shipwreck Beach is best suited for advanced swimmers and surfers. The waves can get fairly large, but it can be a favorite among many experienced surfers, boogie boarders, windsurfers, and body surfers.
However, Shipwreck does offer many other great activities for visitors. You can enjoy fishing, beach combing and sunbathing along its shore, as well as hiking. The area has a great hiking trail along the cliffs that look over the beach's beautiful vista.
Also, both the Hyatt Regency Kauai and the Poipu Kai Resort fronts Shipwreck Beach, where you can enjoy restaurants, shops and bars. The Hyatt has such extraordinary grounds and swimming pools that even if you aren't a guest, you'll want to stroll along the walkway just to see it.
