Molokai is known as "The Friendly Isle." It is also considered the most Hawaiian island. Like stepping back in time 50 years, you won't find traffic lights, elevators, neon, malls, glitz, or night life. If you're looking for rural relaxation, snorkeling, beautiful ocean views, beaches, and old Hawaii, you'll find it in Molokai.
Molokai is the smallest of the main Hawaiian chain; 38 miles long and only 10 to 15 miles wide. Its western side is arid and dry and the eastern side is more lush and verdant. Molokai's north side is famous for having the world's highest sea cliffs which rise some 3000 feet out of the ocean.
Kaunakakai is Molokai's largest town and has a few tourist shops, a full service grocery market called "The Friendly Market", a health food store, a bakery, and even a wine and cheese shop. You'll also find some shopping in the villages of Kualapu'u and Maunaloa.
The 2774-acre Kamakou Forest Preserve on Molokai is home to 5 species of endangered birds and over 200 Hawaiian plants that grow only in this preserve. Hiking tours can be arranged through the Nature Conservancy of Hawaii.
