Maui is the second largest Hawaiian island with roughly 727 square miles. Formed by two ancient adjacent volcanoes, the island of Maui is called the "Valley Isle" because of the narrow wedged shaped plain between the two towering 10 thousand foot high mountains.
Kahului with a population of just over 20,000 is the largest town on the island and is located on the central north shore. Though not considered a tourist destination, the town has a variety of interesting sites worth seeing including a museum, the Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.
The most popular tourist destinations include Lahaina, Kaanapali, Kihei, Kapalua, and Wailea. The small town of Hana on the far eastern side of the island is also famous for its remoteness and for the beautiful narrow winding road that connects it with the rest of the island.
Maui vacation rentals, hotels, condos, and luxury resorts abound. The island is developing and growing at a frantic pace and stems primarily from visitors falling in love with the island and deciding to stay. I can't say that I blame them.
