New system will enhance Kauai's 911 coverage
A newly installed "Enhanced 911" system will allow Kaua'i Police Department dispatchers to immediately pinpoint and digitally map the location of 911 calls made on most cellphones around the island.
The tracking could only be done previously with calls from land lines linked to residences or businesses.
"Our emergency workers now have the capability of locating most 911 cellphone callers, including stranded hikers and people who are injured and can't describe where they're at," Kaua'i Mayor Bryan Baptiste said in a news release.
