Visitor traffic improves slightly
Daily arrivals estimates by the state suggest Hawaii did get a small visitor bump over Fourth of July week, but overall July arrivals remain fractionally lower than traffic at the same time last year.
Total arrivals by air, which lately have been running around 26,000 a day, spiked to more than 28,000 on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday before the Fourth of July holiday.
July arrivals through Monday topped 240,000, about 3,000 short of last year at the same time, a decline of 1.3 percent. June arrivals had been down 1.4 percent.
So far this month arrivals from the Mainland are up 1 percent to Honolulu, representing perhaps 1,000 extra visitors, but domestic arrivals are down 1.2 percent to Maui, down 3.3 percent to Kauai, and down 23.4 percent to the Big Island.
Japanese arrivals actually are up 3.1 percent so far this month, about 1,300 more visitors, for a total of 43,422 so far.
