Company To Build Ethanol Plant On Kauai

Longtime sugarcane grower Gay and Robinson Inc. announced on Monday that it will team up with Pacific West Energy to build an ethanol plant on Kauai.
The venture allows Gay and Robinson to keep about 230 jobs from its agricultural sugarcane land.
The plant will be designed to produce 12 million gallons of ethanol fuel each year, according to a statement from Gay and Robinson.
"We're excited to partner with Pacific West Energy and begin transforming G&R from a commodity raw sugar producer to a provider of renewable and alternative energy for Kauai and Hawaii," Gay and Robinson President Alana Kennett said in a written statement.
Besides using biomass to create ethanol, the company said it also plans to pursue biodiesel production, hydro power and solar energy production.
Hawaii requires gasoline sold in the state to include 10 percent ethanol.
