The sun is higher in the Hawaiian sky, the temperature is climbing, and hotel occupancy rates have begun to creep up as well. For the period May 23-29 the statewide rate was 76 percent, fully 24.4 points better than last year.

Average room rates across the state were 10.3 percent higher than the nearest comparable week in late May 2003, Hospitality Advisors LLC reported.

Maui and Kauai hotels were by far the fullest, and charging about fifty dollars a night more than hotels in Waikiki. But Oahu and the Big Island showed the biggest improvement over last year.

Around the islands:

Oahu: 74.4 percent, 32.6 percentage points better than the commensurate week last week, with average room rates up 9.6 percent to $122.58 a night.
Maui: 80.0 percent, 12.0 points better than last year, with average room rates up 9.8 percent to $179.50 a night.
Kauai: 77.5 percent, 1.4 points better than last year, with average room rates up 13.2 percent to $178.03 a night.
Big Island: 66.8 percent, 28.2 points better than last year, with average room rates up 18.6 percent to $138.06 a night.
The national hotel occupancy rate in the same seven-day period was 64.6 percent, up 13.5 points from last year, with room rates up 7.6 percent. Hotels were 72.7 percent fill in Los Angeles and 70.8 percent full in Orlando, Smith Travel Research LLC reported.
