About 140,000 retirees in Hawaii can now purchase travelers checks and foreign currency either on the phone or via Web site.
American Express said Wednesday that the arrangement is part of a new program it has started with the AARP.
"We wanted to give Hawaii's seniors a convenient way to purchase our travel products and ensure that they have peace of mind when they travel," said Valerie Soranno Keating, president of American Express Travelers Cheques & Prepaid Services.
New TravelFunds, which is a plastic card version of traveler's checks, also is available to AARP members through the Hawaii Federal Credit Union, she said.
They can be used at stores and ATMs worldwide that accept the American Express card, she said.
Nationally, seniors spend more than $30 billion traveling each year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. They also travel more and carry more cash while on vacation than younger people, according to American Express.
