The largest island in the Hawaiian chain is named Hawaii but is also known as the "Big Island" to avoid confusing it with the name of the state. With an area of 4,028 square miles, the Big Island is larger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined and its mass is still growing with the help of its two active volcanoes; Mauna Loa and Kilauea.
A dormant volcano on the island, Mauna Kea is considered the tallest mountain in the world when measured from its base on the ocean floor. Standing at 13,769 feet above sea level, the mountain is actually about 33,000 ft when measured from the ocean's floor. It is often snow capped during the Northern Hemisphere's winter months.
Hawaii vacations on the Big Island have become the island's main economic force with most vacationers choosing destinations on the western coast around Kona where you can find many Big Island vacation rental homes, condos, hotels and resorts.
