Wailua River is the only river in the entire state of Hawaii that is navigable with anything larger than a kayak. It flows from Mount Waialeale (often called the "wettest spot on Earth" - receiving over 426 inches of rainfall per year) near the center of the island through the town of Wailua to Wailua Bay on the eastern shore of Kauai. A reconstructed ancient Hawaiian village is located along its banks and available for tours. A few miles up river from this picture is the beautiful Wailua Falls that can be viewed from a roadside lookout at the end of Highway 583. |
