This glorious lookout of the Kalalau Valley provides one of the most fantastic views of the Pacific in all of Hawaii.
At two miles wide, the valley is one the largest on Kauai's
west side. It's become one of the most photographed areas of Hawaii and has been the backdrop for countless movies, including King Kong and Jurassic Park.
At 4,000 feet above sea level, the Kalalau Lookout is the highest elevation you will reach in
Kauai by road alone. You will find the air much cooler at that level than along the coast or in the valleys, and clouds will often cover the lookout's view. It's best to arrive early before the day's clouds fill the valley below.
Popular wildlife in the area is the Nene, the Hawaiian goose. They commonly walk along the roads, so be careful not to hit them with your car.
To get there, take Highway 50 west from
Hanapepe toward Waimea. Turn right on Waimea Canyon Road just after mile marker #23. Kalalau Lookout is located near the end of the road at mile marker #18.
Available facilities at the lookout point include restrooms and picnic tables.
